AUSTIN - Texas Governor Rick Perry signed House Bill 2 into law bringing a halt to abortions after the 5th month of pregnancy. HB 2 also requires regulation of the medication abortion drug RU-486, requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at nearby a hospital and requires abortion facilities to meet ambulatory surgical center standards. Abortion facilities have until September 1, 2014 to meet these requirements.
In a letter to Governor Perry on May 24, 2013, Representative Bonnen stood with 60 House members in urging the Governor to add pro-life legislation to the call. Representative Bonnen joint authored the bill during both the first and second special sessions.
“At the end of the day, House Bill 2 makes sure that anyone performing abortions in the State of Texas is doing so in a facility that meets appropriate safety guidelines, and that people there are prepared to handle any emergencies that might occur.” said Governor Perry at the bill signing. “That is a reasonable, common sense expectation for those caring for the health and safety of Texans.”
